Advancing Quality and Safe Healthcare in Africa

The 2nd World Patients Conference, held in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 19-20, 2024, brought together healthcare professionals, advocates and patients worldwide to address global healthcare challenges and explore innovative solutions. WICO Zimbabwe was thrilled to have its Director, Rebecca Tendai Chirenga, share her expertise, highlighting her dedication to healthcare excellence and patient-centered care, which perfectly aligns with the conference’s objectives.

Mrs. Chirenga’s speech, “Advancing Quality and Safe Healthcare in Africa,” emphasized the urgency of improving access to quality healthcare on the continent. She noted that Africa carries 24% of the global disease burden with only 3% of the world’s healthcare workforce, calling for a unified effort to enhance healthcare systems. Key strategies included:

  • Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure: upgrading facilities and equipment
  • Community Engagement: involving local communities in healthcare decisions
  • Leveraging Technology: adopting innovative healthcare solutions
  • Public-Private Partnerships: collaborating with governments, NGOs and private sector entities

These initiatives prioritize equity, inclusivity and social justice, recognizing healthcare as a fundamental human right. Mrs. Chirenga stressed the importance of sharing experiences from countries facing unique healthcare challenges, aiming for transformative change and actionable outcomes.

As a prominent advocate for addressing critical healthcare challenges in Africa, Mrs. Chirenga’s leadership inspires action toward equitable healthcare. Her participation reinforced WICO Zimbabwe‘s mission to improve healthcare outcomes and empower patients, particularly women and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), the most marginalized groups in society.
